Giving Frequently Asked Question About Tithing, Giving and Investments What is a tithe? A Tithe is one tenth of ones income that is given to the Lord Lev 27:30 “A tithe of everything from the land, whether grain from the soil or fruit from the trees belongs to the Lord; it is holy to the Lord.” Deut 12:4-7, Malachi 3:10, Should I tithe off my gross earnings or the net amount of my paycheck? The most common view is that gross earnings is the amount of God’s provision, and the tithe should be based on one-tenth of God’s provision. Taxes are generally considered payment for the privileges and services provided by the government. Though scripture doesn’t necessarily use the literal terms “net” or “gross.” it is important to note that the spirit in which we give is of greatest value to God. He tells us in II Corinthians 9 that “each man should give what he has decided in his heart to give; not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver.” What if I don’t have enough money to tithe after bills? Giving 10% of your income to your church can be a big and often frightening commitment! But scripture tells us to honor Him with our first fruits and our blessings will be overflowing, so, we must learn to trust that He is faithful to provide. God wants us to trust Him. Seek His guidance in how much you should give, and he will honor your faithfulness and obedience. 2 Corinthians 8:12 “For if the willingness is there, the gift is acceptable according to what one has, not according to what he does not have.” If we are to encourage people to get out of debt, why does Crossway accept credit card donations? Debit and credit cards can be an efficient tool for payments and purchases. Many people utilize them in place of checks or cash throughout the month, then pay off the balance in full. For these people, we offer the option of using a credit or debit card to tithe. We strongly discourage those who have ongoing credit card debt from using this option. Can I pay my tithe online? Yes, you can make a one time donation by clicking here.
How is giving different from tithing? Giving is generally considered donations over and above your tithe amount. You can give to a specific ministry or need that may arise within the church. For example Crossway’s 3F campaign, New Faith, New Faces, New Future is a fund for Crossway land & facilities. Currently we are holding a mortgage on our property. We have built into the budget the required amount of mortgage payment each month. Any monies given to this fund are sent directly to pay down the principal of this loan. Through God, we receive many things—out talents, finances, opportunities, possessions—and in return, He asks that we give back only a portion. It is through this commitment that we enable more hearts to be reached, more lives to be changes, more souls to be saved, more families to be brought together and more hope to be shared. With Him, there is as much receiving as there is giving. And we are thankful for the resources we are entrusted with through His faithful provision to each of you. What do you mean my Investments? Many times throughout the year, Crossway will have investment opportunities to produce income which is used for a set purpose. These opportunities are in the form of Golf Tournaments, Yard Sales, BBQ Meal, Fish Fry, Café purchases and the like. They are generally specifically assigned to benefit ministries such as: Mission trip expenses, outreach & mission opportunities, Music Ministry, Youth Ministry and so on.
